Emotional derby at Goldenacre pick of weekend card
04-Oct-2007Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One leaders Boroughmuir take their unbeaten record across town to face an improving Heriot's side on Saturday.
The occasion will be poignant given the death of former 'Muir favourite and Scotland cap Bruce Hay earlier this week. Boroughmuir captain Rory Couper and his troops will be looking for their sixth win on the spin.
Elsewhere in the top flight on Saturday two resurgent outfits in Dundee HSFP and Edinburgh Accies meet at Mayfield, Watsonians - without injured props Andrew Welsh and Kian Coertze - welcome Melrose to Myreside, GHA take on Ayr, Stirling County face Glasgow Hawks and Currie face a tricky road trip to Hawick.
In Premier Two, the match of the day is at Burnbrae where West of Scotland are taking on second place Cartha Queens Park and in Premier Three it should be an exciting tussle between the top two - Gala and Ardrossan Accies.
The National League clubs are also on league business this weekend while the Regional League clubs are beginning the long road to Murrayfield as the cup kicks off.

Cumnock Cougars Mini-Rugby Festival
04-Oct-2007The annual Cumnock mini-rugby festival takes place this Sunday at Broomfield will this year trial an exciting new format. The emphasis will be on enjoyment and player development rather than on results.
Recently the SRU have become concerned that the results of games at primary school level have been more important than the players enjoying themselves and developing their skills. Coaches have been encouraged to put the children first before winning to ensure that players develop the basic core skills of running, passing, tackling and support play.
The mini-rugby section at Cumnock has embraced this philosophy and this year's festival will be completely different to previous ones. A round robin tournament will still be held for the P4 to P7 age groups, but the teams and players will be assessed by the opposition team coaches, the referee and a team of independent observers.
Points will be awarded for the core skills, with the result of each game being of minor significance. More importantly, a man-of-the-match award for a member of each team will be awarded after every game, rewarding those players that perform well, no matter the result of the game.
A spokesman said: "The festival is attracting a lot of interest at local and indeed national level and the organisers are to be congratulated in their efforts to progress the development of young players. The whole emphasis of the new format is fun."
Meggetland men make it five from five
29-Sep-2007Boroughmuir defeated local rivals Watsonians 29-20 in a cracking match this afternoon to stay top of Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One.
Eamon John's men took advantage of Watsonians being down to 14 men just before the break - when visiting skipper Will Rowley was in the sin bin - to post the match's first two tries.
Centre Elgan O'Donnell and winger Rory Couper went over to give Boroughmuir a 15-3 lead at half-time, but after the turnaround Watsonians fought back.
Thanks to the promptings of stand-off Andrew Skeen Watsonians carved out a 20-15 lead and it took all of Boroughmuir's resilience to recover.
Recover they did though, man of the match Steven Ruddick and prop Freddie Lait leading them home with a try apiece.
Meanwhile, Edinburgh Accies are off the bottom of the table after a 16-12 home win over fellow strugglers GHA.
Stand-off David Blair was the hero with all the points in the shape of a try, three penalties and a conversion.
Elsewhere in the top flight, Melrose beat Stirling County 33-16 to stay second, Ayr beat Hawick 18-17, Heriot's won 32-27 at Currie and Dundee HSFP got a vital 20-19 win at Glasgow Hawks.

East Lothian men going for five in a row
26-Sep-2007Haddington entertain Hamilton on Saturday looking for their fifth straight Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division Two match on the spin.
The Neilson Park side were only promoted to the division over the summer but have played some great stuff so far to top the table ahead of more established names, with skipper Donald Snodgrass in great form.
Of the other teams who have started well in the very competitive league, West of Scotland travel to Jed-Forest at the weekend while Biggar face winless Stewart's Melville FP in Edinburgh.
Meanwhile, in the top flight on Saturday leaders Boroughmuir take on third place Watsonians in a mouth watering Edinburgh derby while the Edinburgh Accies-GHA clash will see no quarter given down at the bottom.
In the National leagues unbeaten Falkirk's trip to RHC Cougars in Division One should be an entertaining affair while in the Regional leagues, Caledonia League Division One outfit St Andrews University, with the freshers now arrived to bolster the side, will be keen to continue their good start at home to Waid Academy FP.

Muir romp to top of the table
22-Sep-2007Boroughmuir continued their unbeaten start to the season with a thumping win over Stirling County at Bridgehaugh today.
The Meggetland men ran in seven tries in the 52-13 victory to leapfrog Currie at the top of Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One table.
Back-row Angus Martyn led the way with two scores while Ben Fisher, Sean Crombie, Elgan O'Donnell, Malcolm Clapperton and Andy Hadden all also crossed.
At Myreside, Watsonians scored two tries in the last two minutes to beat Currie 27-16 and set up a cracking match with Boroughmuir next week.
In a game dominated by the forwards Currie looked to be on course for victory but the late salvo came from the home team with full-back Andrew Skeen and replacement back-row Jonny Pelter scoring converted tries in a thrilling finale.
Melrose too got their third win of the campaign, beating struggling Dundee 46-13 at Mayfield, hooker Wayne Mitchell and winger Mark Robertson both bagging two tries apiece for the Borderers.
Hawick completed a stunning second half comeback to see off GHA at Mansfield Park. Trailing 30-16 at the break the home side fought back to win 37-30 and collect a bonus point.
Edinburgh Accies remain bottom after their third straight loss. They were beaten by Glasgow Hawks 27-7, last season's Hawks' player of the year John Fitzpatrick amongst the tries.
Finally, Ayr beat Heriot's 27-17 at Goldenacre, back-row Paul Burke notching two tries as the visitors got their first win on the board for 2007/08.

15-Sep-2007
Fourth place Watsonians welcome leaders Currie to Myreside on Saturday in the game of the day in Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One.
Watsonians have bounced back to an opening day defeat to Hawick with wins over GHA and Ayr and will be hoping wingers Ali Rowe, pictured, and Rohan Steyl can continue their try scoring form.
Reigning champions Currie remain unbeaten and showed their fighting qualities with a 28-22 win over Stirling County last Saturday, replacement prop Lawrence Lappin scoring the winning try with two minutes to go.
There will also be an interesting match at Old Anniesland and it certainly will not be for the faint hearted. Bottom two Glasgow Hawks and Edinburgh Accies will clash.
Elsewhere in the top flight Stirling County and Boroughmuir meet at Bridgehaugh, Hawick take on GHA, Dundee HSFP face Melrose and Heriot's welcome winless Ayr to Goldenacre.
In Division Two the top two will square up at Hartreemill with Biggar welcoming leaders Haddington.
In Division Three leaders Gala play Peebles.

Premiership Roundup
15-Sep-2007Boroughmuir are top of Premier 1 after a convincing win at home against Dundeed HSFP by 44-10. Currie are also unbeaten but failed to pick up a bonus point after coming back to beat visitors Stirling County 28-22.
It was a good week for the two Borders clubs who took advantage of Stirling and Heriot's losses to move up the table. Melrose had back-to-back wins for the first time in two seasons by defeating Glasgow Hawks 32-25 at The Greenyards while Hawick gained revenge over Edinburgh Accies at Raeburn Place for their Cup semi-final loss last year by sneaking a win 13-12.
Heriot's went down to GHA 31-27 - the Glasgow side's first win of the season - while in the other game Ayr lost at home again; this time by 27-20 to Watsonians.
In Division 2 newly-promoted Haddington still top the table with a home win against West Of Scotland 22-19. In the other five matches the winners all travelled away from home to collect their points.
Hamilton won 7-6 at Hillhead/Jordanhill, Cartha QP shocked a poor Jed-Forest to take the game 15-7, Biggar won at Kelso (25-9) and Selkirk defeated Musselburgh 24-7. Aberdeen Grammar were too strong for Stewart's-Melville at Inverleith and ran in winners 22-15.
In the third Division of the Premiership Gala went top with a brilliant second half display to destroy Murrayfield Wanderers 73-0 away from home, but Ardrossan Academicals came unstuck at Peebles 32-3 to lose their lead at the head of the league.
Dunfermline beat Irvine 9-3, Ellon had a good home win over Kirkcaldy 13-10, Berwick came down to earth after scoring 50 points last week when they lost 43-5 to Livingston away from home while Morgan Academy beat Perthshire 33-18 in the other game.
In the National League Division 1 Garnock top the table with a maximum 15 points after their win over Preston Lodge by 41-0. Also unbeaten, but with 14 points, are Falkirk who smashed Cambuslang 64-12 away from home.
Division 2 leaders Forrester were given a fright by Dumfries but just edged them out 31-30 in a thriller to retain their lead with 15 points while Howe Of Fife beat Newton Stewart convincingly 50-0 to remain in second spot on 14.
In Division 3 Marr sensationally won 120-0 against Glenrothes to top the table on 15 points with Lenzie still unbeaten on 14 points after seeing off Lismore at home. For more details on all these games and league table click on our Results page.
County travel to Currie as action heats up
Unbeaten sides Currie and Stirling County meet at Malleny Park on Saturday in the match of the day.
Ally Donaldson's Currie side top Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One after toughing out a win over Dundee last weekend.
Full-back Johnny Smith, a Kiwi who has arrived from High Wycombe, is set to make his home debut against County, who themselves have made an impressive start.
The Bridgehaugh men have beaten GHA and drawn with Ayr and will see the trip to Edinburgh as another test of their credentials.
Elsewhere, Edinburgh Accies welcome Hawick to Raeburn Place looking to bounce back from a thumping at Melrose, Ayr - looking for their first win - host Watsonians and Dundee HSFP visit second placed Boroughmuir.
Heriot's young charges travel to Braidholm to tackle GHA and Melrose host Glasgow Hawks.
In Division Two top billing goes to the first versus fourth place battle in East Lothian, Haddington taking on West of Scotland, while in Division Three leaders Ardrossan Accies face a testing trip to Peebles.
The top game in the National Leagues could well be Forrester-Dumfries tie, the home side leading Division One after not letting in a point this season yet.
Results and news will go up on the site over the weekend and remember to email us with updates from your club to gary@scrummagazine.com

Rubislaw for thrills as East Lothian men win
09-Sep-2007A hat-trick from Donald Snodgrass helped Haddington record a 40-34 win over Aberdeen Grammar at Rubislaw on Saturday.
The thrilling victory keeps them top of the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division Two table, one point ahead of Biggar who thumped Hillhead/Jordanhill 62-0.
All the weekend's Premiership results as well as those from the National Leagues and the Regional Leagues are now on the site. Tables will be updated on Monday.
Easson helps fire Currie to the top
08-Sep-2007
Currie earned a hard fought 16-6 win over Dundee this afternoon to go to the top of the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One table.
The reigning champions found it tough on Tayside but came through, Edinburgh centre Andrew Easson, pictured, scoring the only try of the match.
Fellow Edinburgh side Boroughmuir are second after an exciting 24-22 win at Old Anniesland over Glasgow Hawks.
Young winger Tom Bury notched two tries while Malcolm Clapperton and Angus Martyn also went over to secure the bonus point victory for the visitors.
Heriot?s beat Hawick 36-29 at Goldenacre, with former Greens man Bruce McNeil amongst the scorers for the home side.
Melrose thumped Edinburgh Accies 40-6 at The Greenyards, centre Jamie Murray bagging a hat-trick while Stirling County and Ayr fought out an 18-18 draw at Bridgehaugh.
Finally, Watsonians - for whom winger Ali Rowe was on top form - ran in six tries as they beat GHA 40-15 at Myreside to get off the mark.
Results and reports from other divisions will appear on the website over the weekend.
Full steam ahead
02-Sep-2007There is a "golden opportunity" to encourage more people to get involved in rugby union in Scotland over the coming months, according to Colin Thomson, the SRU's Head of Community Rugby.
With the sport set to have increased exposure during the next month, with the World Cup kicking off and Scottish Hydro Electric having been announced as a major sponsor of the community game in Scotland, it is an exciting time.
The three year deal between the SRU and Scottish Hydro Electric, will see the energy company support league and cup competitions in the shape of the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership; the Scottish Hydro Electric National Leagues; the Scottish Hydro Electric Regional Leagues and the Scottish Hydro Electric Cup.
A full Scottish Hydro Electric fixture list is inserted in every issue of the September magazine.
County look to continue good start
02-Sep-2007
Stirling County take on Ayr in their first home game since returning to the top flight tomorrow (Saturday).
The Bridgehaugh men got off to a flyer last weekend with a 36-9 win over GHA and they will be keen to build on the strong start.
They know it will not be easy, however, against a visiting side smarting from an agonising 23-22 home defeat to Dundee on the opening day. Craig Redpath's men, pictured, will know victory is imperative in - what looks like being - a tough division.
Elsewhere in Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One Glasgow Hawks entertain Boroughmuir, who will have Graeme McCallum back in the second-row, Watsonians host GHA at Myreside, Edinburgh Accies travel to The Greenyards to face Melrose and Dundee HSFP, boosted by Graham Thomson's return at full-back, take on Currie on Tayside.
In Premier Two the match of the day pitches top two Aberdeen Grammar and Haddington together at Rubislaw while the Gala-Morgan clash in Division Three could be a tasty affair.
There is also a full card in the National Leagues and the regional leagues tomorrow.

Elsewhere in the division West of Scotland, Aberdeen, Biggar and Jed-Forest all chalked up away wins.
In Division Three performance of the day came from Ardrossan Accies who beat Murrayfield Wanderers 44-0 in the shadow of the national stadium to top the table at this early stage.
There were some cracking games in the National Leagues too with another newly promoted side, Forrester, catching the eye in a 52-3 home win over Newton Stewart.
All Premier and National League results will be on the site by Sunday evening at the latest while we are working on incorporating the Regional League fixtures too.
