Lasswade to hold representative match
Monday, 28-Jan-2008Lasswade's redeveloped Hawthornden rugby ground is to host a match between Scotland under-19 and Premier One champions Boroughmuir next Tuesday, February 5, it has been revealed.
The news that the match is to be hosted in Midlothian has been greeted with delight by committee members at Lasswade as the ambitious Scottish Hydro Electric National League Division Three side has been keen to host representative fixtures since the summer when the new facilities opened.
They were close to securing the Edinburgh-Tonga pre-season friendly before it was moved to Myreside, however, the chance to see some of the country's best young talent take on Eamon John's champions should draw a good crowd.
Meanwhile, in March the Scottish Universities side will also play two matches on consecutive Friday evenings under the impressive new floodlights at the ground.
The first game promises to be a real cracker when the students take on their English counterparts on the eve of the Calcutta Cup match on Friday, March 7. They will then face the Combined Services under-23s the following week.
Dunbar Grammar through to final
Monday, 28-Jan-2008Dunbar Grammar School's under-15 rugby team are through to the final of the Bell Lawrie Scottish Schools Bowl thanks to a hard fought 17-14 victory in Cupar over Bell Baxter High School.
Weather conditions were ideal and both teams got off to a good start. The game was fairly even until Fraser Maddox opened the scoring for the visitors with a trademark burst through the defence. Soon after Maddox broke the line again and off-loaded to Neil Spowart to score a fine try under the posts. Ross Charlton converted the kick.
Bell Baxter capitalised on a lapse in concentration by Dunbar to score their first try just before half time. Bell Baxter then kicked off the second half and had Dunbar pinned in their own '22, for most of the rest of the game. Nothing Dunbar attempted was able to lift the siege and Bell Baxter's grip on the game. Eventually the home side scored in the corner thanks to their powerful winger who brushed off a grasping challenge from the visitors Captain Robbie Wilson.
However, the East Lothian youngsters were to have the last word in a dramatic finish. In the very last play of the game Dunbar spread the ball wide to Mark Reid who smashed through the first line of defence before making a precision pass to Gary Peebles who scored in the corner.
County control final to lift silverware
Saturday, 26-Jan-2008Stirling County won the John Lewis Youth League Cup final with a 30-0 victory over Musselburgh in front of over 1,000 supporters on Saturday.
In windy conditions County got the first points on the board in the seventh minute through a penalty by stand-off Stuart Edwards. Musselburgh got the chance to settle their nerves and get some points on the board four minutes later.
The tough penalty attempt by Bryan Walls, the smallest player on the pitch and easily Musselburgh's best player on the night, hit the right upright and bounced down. The attacking team reacted well and centre Michael Scott was first to the ball. He tried to go for the line himself, but perhaps should have passed the ball as County regrouped and managed to clear.
Four minutes later County extended their lead to six points, Edwards kicking another penalty after skipper Craig Adams and replacement winger Gavin Denham had caused problems.
And in the 25th minute it became 13-0 when centre Danny Gilmour, the man of the match, showed great composure. He spotted a gap and chipped ahead before chasing it. He got there first and hacked it on before diving over the line for the game's first try, converted by Edwards.
After the break County were again dominant and the clinching try came in the 51st minute, Musselburgh hooker Alun Walker overthrew at a lineout and the County back-row took advantage.
Robbie Boswell fed Andy Hutton to start the move and it was that man Gilmour again who made an incisive break to set up centre partner Stuart McIntosh for a converted try.
McIntosh added his second soon after, taking advantage of loose play by Musselburgh to run 50 metres and score, while it was fitting that County's captain Adams should touch down for the final try such was his influence on the match.

The match was evenly poised at 7-6 to the visitors at the break, but three tries in the last 20 minutes saw the men from Myreside home for their fifth league win in a row.
'Sonians try in the first half came from skipper Kyle Traynor, while after the interval Eddie Howe, with a 70 yard run, and replacements Jonny Pelter and Sam Paulo went over. The rest of their points came from the boot of Andrew Skeen with Paul Arnold kicking two penalties for the home side who stay I the relegation fight.
Meanwhile, Hawick secured a vital 22-21 win at doomed Dundee HSFP as they too bid to stave off the drop.
Their hero was Craig Neish who netted 17 points at Mayfield as they came back from 21-9 down at the break.

Saturday, 26-Jan-2008Scotland's young rugby talent put on a good show despite the weather at Murrayfield on Friday night in the Bell Lawrie Scottish Schools finals.
George Watson's College won the under-15 trophy, defeating George Heriot's in the final 7-5. Watson's regained the trophy thanks to a try by hooker Ben Griffin and a conversion by winger Adam Watt, while Heriot's unconverted try came from centre Todd Tukalo.
In the under-18s final, Merchiston Castle pounced on two mistakes in the second half to win the cup for the first time in six years against George Watson's College.
The sides were tied at 3-3 at the break, but Merchiston grabbed the first try after pressure on the Watson's line, No.8 Tomas Palacios pouncing to score after Watson's failed to clear their lines.

Relegation fight hots up
Thursday, 24-Jan-2008
January may have been a bitterly cold month for most of us, but with five teams now split by just five points in Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One to see who will join seemingly doomed Dundee HSFP in the drop things are hotting up on the pitch.
On Saturday, 11th placed GHA, who are on 32 points, face a trip to city rivals Glasgow Hawks with the latter having been dragged into the relegation battle and sitting seventh with 37 points.
Tenth placed Edinburgh Accies will welcome their neighbours Watsonians from across the city to Stockbridge, boosted by last week's fine win at deposed champions Currie.
Stirling County, in ninth, will be looking to build on their good second half performance against Watsonians last week that earned them a losing bonus point. They host Heriot's, coached by ex-County man Bob McKillop, this weekend.
Elsewhere, eighth placed Hawick will look to all but end Dundee HSFP'S stint in the division with what would be a priceless win at Mayfield and champions Boroughmuir, pictured, will show off the trophy to their home supporters at Meggetland against Currie.

Finals weekend at Murrayfield
Thursday, 24-Jan-2008Friday and Saturday night will be nights Scotland's young rugby prospects will never forget, with six teams battling in out for silverware.
First up George Heriot's will take on George Watson's in the Bell Lawrie Scottish Schools Cup under-15 final at 6pm on Friday.
The former reached the final with a thrilling 14-13 win over Edinburgh Academy and have come on a great deal this season under the coaching of maths teacher Derek Porteous.
The under-15s from Watson's will be looking to emulate last year's side who won the final 12-5 over Edinburgh Academy and a number of that group of players are now in the under-18 side.
They will be taking to the field at 7.30pm with their team mates, led by No.8 Stuart McInally, to take on Merchiston Castle. Watson's will be confident having beaten Dollar and Robert Gordon's on the way to the big match, but Merchiston beat them earlier in the season and in Sam Hughes at centre have an outstanding prospect.
Then on Saturday night it is the turn of Musselburgh and Stirling County in the John Lewis Youth League Cup final (6pm).
The former will be looking to avenge last year's final defeat by all-conquering Howe of Fife while County will be after the club's seventh win in the event in what is shaping up to be a cracker.
Admission to all three matches is free.

Zions looking for players
Wednesday, 23-Jan-2008Great Britain's Jewish Rugby team - the British Zions - are looking to build a side capable of winning gold at the 2009 Maccabiah Games and are now calling upon any Jewish rugby players who think they have what it takes to go to Israel to help bring back the winners medal.
Past competitions have seen the Zions come back with silver and bronze, while previous members of the squad have included Aaron Liffchak who has since become part of the Saracens squad, while several others have appeared in the Varsity match.
Trial matches under the auspices of manager Jonathan Seltzer will be held before the end of the season, with a provisional date of early March, where players will be assessed and a squad duly selected.
Those selected to represent GB will face opponents from a number of the major rugby playing countries around the world in particular South Africa and the United States, countries who have previously included full internationals and provincial players, therefore the Zions want to be sure that they take their strongest ever squad to Israel.
Any players wishing to register should go to the Maccabi GB website http//www.maccabigb.org and anyone who wants any further information should contact rugby@maccabirugby.co.uk

County make it to Murrayfield
Monday, 21-Jan-2008Stirling County won through their semi-final against Hawick Wanderers in the John Lewis Youth League Cup at the weekend, booking their place at Murrayfield where they will meet Musselburgh.
The visitors had the first chance of points but hooker Lindsey Gibson miscued an early penalty. Instead it was Stirling that got the scoreboard moving with a 13th minute try from scrum-half Ross Drummond, who finished off a charge by lock Grant Gilchrist who had been released on an intelligent inside ball. Stand-off Stuart Edwards converted.Back roared Hawick and from full-back Gary Johnstone's break, wing Glyn Desport supported, and No 8 Gary Lowrie thundered over for the unconverted try.
The only other score of the first-half was an Edwards penalty, Hawick's radar continuing to misfire as centre Lee Armstrong could not reply in kind. From a 5-10 interval deficit, Hawick levelled through centre Scott McLeod's fine try after wing Greg Bouglas had threatened.Stirling regained the lead with a 45th minute try, a scrum pick-up and drive over for No.8 Jason Hill.
Edwards missed that conversion but was on target on tries number three and four as centre Danny Gilmour and prop Blair Craig ensured that it will be the hosts who will be on duty for another Murrayfield showpiece after a 29-10 win.

Boroughmuir are the champions
Saturday, 19-Jan-2008Boroughmuir clinched the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One title today with a 28-19 win at Ayr.
The champions scored tries through Euan Matheson, Cam Ward, Calum Cusiter and Malcolm Clapperton to pick up the silverware at Millbrae and they will no doubt be partying late into the night at Meggetland.
Watsonians are now second after a hard fought win over Stirling County at Myreside. They were coasting at 29-3 up at the break, but the visitors nearly came back for an unlikely win, eventually losing out 29-24.
Currie lost at home to Edinburgh Accies 23-16 in a result which boosts the men from Raeburn Place's survival chances. GHA drew with Melrose 16-16, but bottom side Dundee HSFP lost again, this time 15-7 to Heriot's at Goldenacre.
Elsewhere in the top flight, Hawick defeated Glasgow Hawks 19-3, while West of Scotland triumphed 24-3 against Biggar at Hartreemill in the big match in Premier Two.

Falkirk are December's Club of the Month
Saturday, 19-Jan-2008
High flying Falkirk has been named Scottish Hydro Electric Club of the Month for December.
Currently leading Scottish Hydro Electric National League Division One, they have made progress through the leagues and their playing numbers, particularly at youth level, have grown greatly.
Anna Crampin, Scottish Hydro Electric's Sponsorship Manager, said:
"Falkirk clearly have a vision to boost both their profile and make their ground a welcoming place for more people to play and become involved in rugby. We're delighted that they have won the Scottish Hydro Electric Club of the Month award for December."
Ayr looking to give Lines perfect sign off with win
Saturday, 19-Jan-2008Ayr will be looking to delay Boroughmuir's championship winning party for another seven days and send skipper Scott Lines off with a home win when the side's clash in club rugby's match of the day on Saturday.
The teams clash at Millbrae with the Edinburgh side needing two points to win the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One title, but Ayr are looking to get second themselves and it is their Kiwi skipper Scott Lines' last home game for the club before he returns to his homeland.
Elsewhere in the division, Currie and Edinburgh Accies meet in an Edinburgh derby, Watsonians play Stirling County, GHA meet Melrose, Hawick welcome Glasgow Hawks to the Borders and Dundee HSFP travel to Heriot's needing a win to keep their survival hopes alive.
The top game in Division Two sees Biggar take on West of Scotland at Hartreemill. The encounter is third against first and earlier in the season Biggar won 23-18. Second placed Selkirk face a tough Borders derby at Jed-Forest.
Meanwhile, promotion chasing Kirkcaldy, with No.8 Craig Wilson fresh from his call up to the Club International squad, will be looking to keep up their good form at home to Berwick in Division Three.

Musselburgh into youth final
Saturday, 19-Jan-2008Musselburgh youth side's Team Manager Charlie Sim has said his greatly looking forward to running out at Murrayfield again after they won through to the final of the John Lewis Youth League Cup next Saturday.
The East Lothian youngsters overcame Gala at Stoneyhill 24-12 earlier this week in the last four.
A try by hooker Alan Walker in the second minute was the perfect start for the hosts and with scrum-half Bryan Walls landing penalties in the 10th and 16th minutes it was one-way traffic in the early stages.
Gala centre Gregor Hunter miscued his first penalty attempt but the Borderers, whose backs looked sharp when their forwards were able to purloin possession from the home pack, put points on the board with a try by outside centre Craig Robertson. Hunter converted to leave Gala trailing 7-11 at the break.
The second-half saw the Musselburgh pack turn the screw, demonstrated four minutes after the restart, when a close-range No.8 scrum pick-up enabled prop Craig Owenson to rumble over for the try which Walls converted.
Three minutes later and the speedy Robertson romped home from a charge-down on the 10 metre line to once again keep Gala in contention at 12-18.
Walls, however, had other ideas and his successful third and fourth penalties ensured the home success.
Musselburgh await the winners of Saturday's second semi-final between Stirling County and Hawick Wanderers.
Howe hit back
Thursday, 17-Jan-2008Howe of Fife have hit back at the decision taken to disqualify their side from the John Lewis Youth League Cup. Here is what they had to say:
"Howe of Fife RFC deplores the unilateral decision of the Championship Committee of the SRU yesterday to disqualify the Howe team from the Youth League Cup.
As defending champions every effort was being made to fulfil the quarter-final tie against Hawick Wanderers that had been postponed twice (most recently on January 12) due to weather conditions. A midweek fixture in Hawick on Wednesday 16 January was mooted, but logistically was impossible to fulfil given school and work commitments of players and coaches.
The Howe proposed playing at Murrayfield as an alternative, with which Wanderers appeared sympathetic, but regrettably the SRU could not make any of its back pitches available. The tie could have been played at Hawick this Saturday coming, weather allowing, but for reasons best known only to certain officials, the Howe were told, on less than twenty-four hours notice, that it must play at Hawick on the evening of the 16th or face disqualification. The spin circulated by the SRU to justify it decision that the Howe refused three alternative dates is wrong, reflects badly on those officials concerned, and does Howe of Fife a grave injustice.
The scheduling of the fixture list for this competition by the SRU must be called into question. It was perfectly foreseeable that to attempt to play the quarter-finals, semi- finals and the final all in January was potentially fraught with difficulties. The Howe is firmly of the view that the SRU should have had contingency plans in hand to overcome the problems of bad weather. It did not and its officials have offered little or no help to the Clubs in their attempts to fulfil the fixture.
The consequence was the prospect of the victor having to play the semi-final and final within one week. While far from ideal this appears to have been unacceptable in certain quarters (not Hawick who have been honourable in all their dealings with the Howe over the fixture) and that school of thought has been reflected in the actions of the SRU officials concerned, despite a clear precedent.
In January 2007 the majority of the Howe's Youth squad was required by the SRU, despite pleas for flexibility, to play the semi final and final of the Youth League Cup with one week of their victory (in the colours of Bell Baxter) in the Bell Lawrie Schools Cup. The Howe rose to that challenge successfully. Why then this year has the SRU denied our boys a similar opportunity of success in exactly the same circumstances?
Howe of Fife RFC has long been committed to the development of Youth Rugby at all levels. It has achieved notable successes, particularly last year, that provide a springboard for the growing our game in line with Scottish Rugby's goals. As Scottish Hydro-Electric Club of the Month for November 2007 we take seriously every opportunity to advance our young players' development. "Throwing matches" through alleged intransigence is not part of our ethos. The actions of the SRU in the last twenty-four hours in relation to the Youth League Cup will have nothing other than a negative impact on the Howe's efforts to recruit more players, coaches and volunteers in the future."
What do you think of the decision? Let us know your views by emailing gary@scrummagazine.com

Merchiston make it to the final
Thursday, 17-Jan-2008Scottish Rugby in consultation with its Championship Committee has this afternoon awarded Hawick Wanderers a bye to the semi finals of the John Lewis Youth League Cup after Howe of Fife refused to travel to Hawick this midweek to fulfil the quarter final fixture.
The quarter final match was scheduled for Saturday, January 5, then Saturday, January 12 but on both occasions the pitch was ruled unplayable. Three other dates were offered to Howe of Fife this week, none of which they were prepared to accept.
Scottish Rugby then rescheduled the match for tonight (Wednesday, January 16) in order that Saturday's semi-final against Stirling County at Stirling could go ahead as scheduled, thus giving the winner of that tie a full week to prepare for the final on the international pitch at Murrayfield on Saturday, January 26.
However, Howe of Fife have declined to travel to Hawick and have thus forfeited the tie.

Thursday, 17-Jan-2008Merchiston Castle made it through to next Friday's final of the Bell Lawrie Scottish Schools under-18 Cup final on Wednesday night with a 27-3 win over George Heriot's at Myreside.
A crowd of well over 2,000 enjoyed a great semi final match with Merchiston building up a 15-3 lead in the opening quarter. They then a man yellow carded, but Heriot's could not take advantage.
Indeed, Merchiston all but tied up the victory in first half injury time when the impressive centre Sam Hughes glided in.
The second half was a competitive affair, the only try came from Hughes converted by full-back Glen Leslie to give Merchiston a 27-3 win.

Trinity give thanks
Monday, 14-Jan-2008Trinity Accies President Allan Spencer has written a letter to the Murrayfield Centenary Trust thanking them for their help towards injured player Eddie Muller who suffered a horrific leg break prior to Christmas.
Spencer wrote:
"I am writing to thank the Murrayfield Centenary Trust for the very welcomed and generous cheque which you sent to our injured player Eddie Muller."
"Eddie is still in plaster, and will be for some time, but is in good spirits which were lifted higher by the payment. He hopes to return to his work as soon as possible but the money will go some way to "plugging the gap" until that time. Despite this, and several other injuries in the past few years, Eddie is already talking about next season and I have no doubt that this is due in no small part to the concern shown for him by both the club and the rugby community at large.
"The work of your trust is, yet further, evidence that the rugby community is a close-knit one which has concerns for everyone who plays, at whatever level."
Marr win despite change of strips
Monday, 14-Jan-2008
Marr, pictured, are still in with a slim chance of promotion from Scottish Hydro Electric National League Division Three after they beat Lismore in one of the few matches played in Scotland at the weekend.
Here is the Troon club's take from their website;
Inattention to detail left Marr Rugby's first and second XVs devoid of their usual strips as sets were left at both Duns and Stewartry the previous week. However enough kit was assembled to allow both teams to take the field for league matches this Saturday.
Unfortunately for the twos a loss to local rivals Kilmarnock by 35-7 destroyed the last faint promotion hopes but a well deserved win by the firsts by 41-0 against Lismore kept the Troon and Prestwick side in with a faint chance of promotion.
Despite the Top Gear tyre marks on the pitch left by a local neanderthal Marr ran in six unaswered tries and three conversions plus penalty to beat a hard working but ineffectual Lismore.
Tries were scored by Andy Watson (2), Kyle Bruning, Stuart Millar, Keith Dunsmuir and Robbie Lockie with Gavin Anderson kicking three conversions and a penalty.
Weather plays havoc with fixture card
Saturday, 12-Jan-2008All matches in the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One were postponed today due to frost.
Dundee HSFP, Edinburgh Accies, Glasgow Hawks and Currie called off their respective home matches early on Saturday after heavy overnight frost.
Melrose held on a bit longer to see whether their derby with Hawick could go ahead, but it too fell foul of the weather shortly after lunch.
Bouroughmuir, who would have won the title with a draw or a win over GHA, held on until after 2pm hoping that the match could go ahead at 3pm. Indeed, members of the Meggetland club worked hard on the pitch to try and make it playable and GHA travelled to the capital.
However, the frost won the day and 'Muir will now have to wait to their trip to Millbrae next week to try and clinch the title against Ayr.
The frost has also affected the various other divisions in Scotland today, check our results and tables later this weekend to see which games were off.

GHA out to spoil Boroughmuir's party
Thursday, 10-Jan-2008Boroughmuir know that a win, or even a draw, will bring the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One title to Meggetland on Saturday, but they will not be taking the challenge of GHA lightly.
The Edinburgh side has been head and shoulders above all the other sides this season and will want to claim the silverware on their home pitch in front of their own supporters. One would think they would be too strong for the men from Braidholm, but they will be buoyed by last Saturday's 8-5 win over Currie.
It was Roddy Moir's charges fifth win of the campaign and they will be looking to continue their good form in 2008 at Meggetland to move themselves out of the relegation zone.
Elsewhere in the division on Saturday, second placed Currie take on third placed Ayr.
Earlier in the season when they met at Millbrae Ayr triumphed 17-3 and it should be an intriguing game between two strong packs.
Tenth placed Edinburgh Accies will be looking for a win over Stirling County at home to drag themselves away from the drop zone even further, while Glasgow Hawks face Heriot's, Melrose entertain Hawick in a Borders derby and all but doomed Dundee HSFP welcome Watsonians to Tayside.
In Division Two leaders West of Scotland face a testing trip to Musselburgh and Cartha Queens Park know they need a win at home to Hamilton to boost their chances of staying up.
Relegation rivals Livingston and Berwick have home matches against Ellon and Perthshire respectively in Division Three.

They toughed out a 17-16 victory at Hawick thanks to tries from returning Charlie Keenan and hooker Sean Crombie while nearest rivals Currie and Ayr were failing to win.
Currie lost 8-5 at GHA, a result which boosts the Braidholm side's hopes of survival, and Ayr drew 10-10 at Millbrae with Edinburgh Accies. It all means Boroughmuir are 24 points clear of both Currie and Ayr with just five games to play.
