Jason Tovey gets the nod at stand-off ahead of Duncan Weir for Edinburgh Rugby’s crucial European Rugby Challenge Cup quarter-final against La Rochelle at BT Murrayfield on Friday (kick-off 8pm, live on Sky Sports 3).
The Welshman’s only inclusion is the only change to the backline from last week’s loss to the Scarlets in the Guinness PRO12.
In the pack, Murray McCallum starts at loosehead prop with Allan Dell missing due to concussion.
Grant Gilchrist and Hamish Watson also come into the pack for the injured Ben Toolis and Jamie Ritchie.
Edinburgh are still without key men Magnus Bradbury (knee), Alasdair Dickinson (foot), John Hardie (knee), Nasi Manu (shoulder), WP Nel (neck) and Rory Sutherland (groin) as well as Dell and Toolis.
Acting Head Coach Duncan Hodge said: “Games don’t come much bigger than a European quarter-final and there is no more thrilling an occasion than knockout rugby, so there’s a real feeling of excitement in camp.
“We’ve taken some big scalps in this year’s competition and we’re confident in our ability to take another on Friday. We’ve played some exceptional rugby to finish top of a tough Challenge Cup pool and we’ll look to carry that form into the knockout stages.
“La Rochelle come to BT Murrayfield sitting at the top of the French league but this is a different competition and the first meeting of the clubs, so we’re looking forward to taking them on.”
