This afternoon Scottish rugby fans up and down the land will retreat to hostelries around Edinburgh and beyond after the Italy match to look back on Vern Cotter’s reign in charge of the national side.

There will be discussions, fans and those who were not so keen on ‘Big Stern Vern’, but one statistic that cannot be argued over is the number of players he handed international debuts to.

The first three were Blair Cowan, Gordon Reid and Finn Russell against the USA in the summer of 2014.

Alex Allan came on for the first time later in that one and last weekend against England Cornell Du Preez became the 28th to be handed his Test bow by the big man.

And while the number is not in doubt, perhaps the merits off some of those capped will be discussed in those hostelries as the 6 Nations comes to an exciting end.
