Grant Gilchrist has been catapulted into the Scotland starting XV after Richie Gray failed to recover from a hamstring injury.

On Thursday, Gray was named in the team by Vern Cotter for the match against Italy on Saturday.

However, just before Friday lunchtime Scottish Rugby announced via their social media channels that Gray was out and Gilchrist, who has not played during the 6 Nations as yet, would start in the second-row at BT Murrayfield.

It is a surprise to some that Tim Swinson has not been promoted from the bench to start, but for Gilchrist it is a big opportunity to put a marker down.

Remember this is the man who Cotter made his Captain back in October 2014 only for injury to strike.

The Alloa man has had a nightmare time since, but will want to look forward and not back with the 26-year-old on the verge of earning his 16th cap.
